He had written largely upon the subject, he had lived two years in a tomb at Thebes, while he excavated in the Valley of the Kings, and finally he had created a considerable sensation by his exhumation of the alleged mummy of Cleopatra in the inner room of the Temple of Horus, at Philse. With such a record at the age of thirty-one, it was felt that a considerable career lay before him, and no one was surprised when he was elected to the curatorship of the Belmore Street Museum, which carries with it the lectureship at the Oriental College, and an income which has sunk with the fall in land, but which still remains at that ideal sum which is large enough to encourage an investigator, but not so large as to enervate him. There was only one reason which made Ward Mortimer's position a little difficult at the Belmore Street Museum, and that was the extreme eminence of the man whom he had to succeed. Professor Andreas was a profound scholar and a man of European reputation. His lectures were frequented by students from every part of the world, and his admirable management of the collection intrusted to his care was a commonplace in all learned societies. There was, therefore;l considerable surprise when, at the age of fifty-five, he suddenly resigned his position and retired from those duties which had been both his livelihood and his pleasure. He and his daughter left the comfortable suite of rooms which had formed his official residence in connection with the museum, and my friend, Mortimer, who was a bachelor, took up his quarters there. On hearing of Mortimer's appointment Professor Andreas had...

Overall, a really good collection. Some of the stories are better than others, and some are more overtly creepy than the others. Some of them are "haunting" rather than scary, like the one about the Chinese mission station awaiting a relief that comes just a little too late, and the story about "Devil Bollamore"'s tutor and a devoted wife's last stand for her husband's soul. There's also a great story about a mysterious disappearance from a train, and one about an ingenious plan to become the only heir that backfires. It's definitely worth a read.Product details

Round the Fire Stories Arthur Conan Doyle 9781230348131 Books Reviews
I disagree with the reviewer below that these tales are not "great" or "brilliant". While all these tales certainly aren't great, some shine with brilliancy. "The Brazilian Cat" was a masterpiece of horror. It slowly builds to its conclusion and the wind outside, beautifully described by Conan Doyle, creepily adds to the atmosphere. The story has an even greater impact when we learn our hosts charming facade masks a great evil. The writing is crisp and taunt as it slowly mounts. I'd like to see the reviwer below write something this good...
"The Case of Lady Sannox" is a very dark and disturbing tale with a diabolical twist at the end. There are hints and traces of the more darker corners of Conan Doyle's mind in the Holmes canon. But because those were essentially mysteries I think he held back on the more horror aspects. But in these tales he lets loose that suppressed darker nature of man..
The reviewer complains about most of the characters being male, Caucasian or European. Gee, since most of the tales take place in Europe, that would only make sense, no ? A Europe that was mostly populated with Caucasians at the time. The reviewer below is clearly placing today's liberal ideals on Victorian standards which quite differed quite from our own. As for women, Conan Doyle always wrote admirably and highly of them. In fact, he has a woman outwit the great and mighty Sherlock Holmes and had knights do great, daring, dangerous and chivilrous deeds for women in "The White Company".
My only complaint about this book is it did not include the tale "Lot No. 249". It is without a doubt one of the most chilling and horrifying tales ever written. For an author who was not known for horror or ghost stories, his work in that genre certainly ranks up there with Poe, LeFanu, M.R. James, Machen, Blackwood or Lovecraft. In fact Conan Doyle was a brilliant man, his interests and pursuits branching out and becoming all-encompassing.
My one star rating is not for the stories, which are great, or the interesting annotations, but for this amateurish formatting glitch, which is unforgiveable in even the most basic POD edition. Obviously, this critique only applies to this "edition." For shame.
Loved them
Interesting to read stories that were the start of today's modern mysteries and thrillers.
I love Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and love this collection of short stories. I would definitely recommend this to anyone!
Get a magnifying glass if you want to read this public-domain knockoff, densely printed in tiny type. Or get smart and get a used paperback.
I've been a dedicated fan of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories since I was a child, but had never read his other works. These stories are a treasure. Clever, well-written, spooky or gently macabre, each one is a gem. I looked forward every night to reading one or two before bed. Don't deny yourself this pleasure.
