About Beautiful Joe By Marshall Saunders

Originally published as a novel in 1894, "Beautiful Joe" is based on the true story of a dog who lived in Meaford in southern Ontario. The first Canadian book to sell 1,000,000 copies, the novel was written in 1893 by Margaret Marshall Saunders and was the winning entry submitted to a literary contest sponsored by the American Humane Education Society. Saunders first heard the story of the dog, who had actually been abused and then rescued as depicted in the book, from her sister-in-law, Louise Moore. Louise's father, Walter Moore, had rescued the dog in 1890. Today the town of Meaford is home to a park and statue honoring the real Beautiful Joe, and a private heritage society was created in 1994 to preserve the Moore home and establish a museum. Written as an autobiography from the dog's point of view, the book includes a reference in the first page to Black Beauty, which had also used that device, as "a little book that she [my mistress] says is the story of a horse's life." Joe then explains that he has undertaken the writing of his life's story in the belief that it will please his mistress.

A good book. I'm surprised I didn't read it 55 years ago when I was in the "dog stage" (the Big Red series, The Wild Dog of Edmonton, all of Albert Payson Terhune, and the like). I wish today's children could have the patience to read it.

Each chapter deals with a different aspect of animal life and animal abuse. Many chapters feature Beautiful Joe, savagely abused by his owner; but others deal with raising chickens and the best cages for them, with getting rid of ticks, with cattle, with cats, with hunting dogs, with parrots . . . . It's no wonder that the author contributed to the formation of the ASPCA.

We know that people who abuse animals also abuse people. And the news is full of the horrors of animal abuse. Maybe if parents read a chapter or two of Beautiful Joe to their children, their children will pick up the book and continue to read it on their own. A big step above the badly written garbage that passes as young people's literature. And maybe they'd pick up some good tips on the way to treat animals and to live life.

The abridged version omits some of the stupider commentary on slavery, which I appreciate although book censorship itself is problematic. This is a nice story about being kind to animals with some heavy Christian overtones, but as long as you're aware of what you're in for I think it's a worthwhile addition to a child's reading list.
From Sweet Joe's perspective, the author really makes this dog come alive. It's sad, but grows into a sweet book that was difficult to put down. I only stopped when I was so tired, my kindle fell on my face...four times!
Dog people will especially enjoy this book.
Being a lover of all creatures great and small, but since we don't have a fence, and I refuse to chain a dog, we have a couple of rescue cats. We also enjoy doggie-sitting for a friend's little Jack Rustle mix. (Sometimes, he even loans him to us when we just have to have a dose of "Shorty")
The book is not silly, and is definitely fun and enjoyable.
It's also a good book to read to a child, but you may wish to gloss over the beginning or parts where abuse is involved, although there's not a lot of this. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to "understand" what may be going through the mind of a very special dog.
I loved this book as a kid when I read the Whitman edition. Perhaps it was abridged. At any rate, I just read it as an adult 45 years later.

The book was not like I remembered it. Every page literally this woman went on and on eating and proselytizing either her religious views, humane treatment available views, societal problems, etc. She felt like she had a solution to everything and knew everything.

Some of her techniques were outdated and laughable of course. You could tell she was brought up in a sheltered environment and that she was very well-to-do.

I don't know how children would react to her thinking that people should be tortured for their cruelty to animals. He goes way overboard. I read the entire book because I am stubborn and always start when I finish. But it was torturous at times. She was condescending and patronizing. Very judgmental. Racist too.

She starts off by saying that most of these stories are based on truth. But they are so Outlandish that you know this is untrue.

She goes on and on about just about every farm and domesticated animal there is on this planet. A separate chapter for each. Grueling. It was very graphic and I don't know how children would react to it.

I do not recommend this book.
"Beautiful Joe An Autobiography of a Dog" was even more delightful than I'd hoped! As a longtime dog owner, I've experienced the unique bond of love, faithfulness, protectiveness, & respect between a dog & its owner. Just like relationships between humans, kindness & concern will forge a lifelong bond between animals & people. But, as this book shows so clearly, many people have no interest in learning about the needs of their pets & what happens when they fail in this area. This book is worth reading by everyone in order to learn a necessary point--those who love animals & are willing to earn an animal's trust & sustain it have many lessons to teach humans about relationships with one another. The same ingredients are necessary--kindness & earned respect. Respect is never "owed" in any relationship, including that of an "superior-subordinate." Respect MUST be earned; it can never be "demanded" as we see so many "aggrieved" people demanding these days. Beautiful Joe can teach all of us lessons for today's world. Enjoy!
