So the book started out slow. readers will have to hang in there, because it turned out to be a pretty good read. At times Peyton frustrated me with her ever present lack of understanding. I lost track of how many times she said or thought, "I don't understand". She came off as being kind of dimwitted. The author tended to over explain things. I didn't need an explanation for every smile, or why she decided to take this route instead of that one. Let the reader do some thinking!
Lastly, I know that Ryan is the better chose for Peyton being that he's alive and all, but Drake completely won me over. I felt so bad for him, having to bare witness to the woman you would give your soul for choose another man. It's illogical but I'm rooting for Drake.

This book has a promising story line. I thought the characters were nicely developed and believable. I just felt that the ending was not very satisfying, it seemed the author just stopped and decided to put the conclusion in a new novel. It is a good read, the pace could be a bit faster.
As a whole this book was okay at best. I really couldn't understand the chemistry between Peyton and Ryan. I didn't really care if they ended up together or not.
What I did find interesting about this book is the background into the axeman murders. That kept my interest somewhat. I won't get into any spoilers but I am not rushing at all to read book 2. This book was long and drawn out and it seemed to take forever to get to anything. It only started picking up near the end. I would not recommend this book as a good read, but like I said it is okay at best.
HP Mallory is a fun writer. Her books are easy reads with enough meat to keep you interested. Her version of paranormal romance is a fun ride that you won't want to put down. I think, of all of her series, I'm liking this one the best. Peyton, the leading lady, could use a little more depth, and sometimes I wonder if she's supposed to be as ditzy as she comes across. Overall, though, she's an enjoyable character. I particularly like her ghost "house" guest and am eager to find out more. Favorite scene in the book would have to be the Ouija board scene. I won't spoil it, but it definitely kept my attention.
If you've not read any other Mallory books, be warned that she likes to leave things open for the next book to pick up. I am definitely eager for the next one to come out.
I got this book because I won the second book in a contest. After reading the back of the book I realized I would be lost if I didn't start at the beginning.
So when I first started reading this book, I admit, I was a tad disappointed. To me, the explanations of Peyton's previous life seemed to go on for too long and the dialog was a bit drab. It wasn't bad, it just felt like it could have had more depth or spice.
I think it was about 15%-20% in when things started to pick up and get interesting. I'm glad I stuck with it. This book ends up being a 4 for me. I think the whole story line was interesting and fun. It didn't end in a cliffhanger, but it definitely left me anxious to see what happens next.
Thankfully, I have the second one to whet my appetite. This was a fun and relatively quick read.
Very easy read. Wasn't sure about the story to begin with because it started slow. The structure was interesting and made it easy to continue to read, before I knew it I was hooked. The only things I didn't care for were all the quotes that were thrown in and the French the ghost spoke. The French was ok to make a point, but it never slowed. Between the French and the quotes it made the author come off as cheesy and a little like "look at how much I know..." I will definitely read her other books now either way, her style is refreshing.
I've been anticipating the release of this book since HP first mentioned it. A tough heroin has always appealed to me, so of course I had high hopes. After reading this first book of the series I find myself wanting more. I've already pre-ordered the second book and cannot wait till September gets here.
I understand some people would say that it had a slow start, but I believe without the details it provided us it wouldn't have the same effect as compared to just jumping right in to it. I can appreciate a fast paced book as well but this book just has enough build up to it that it has it's scary parts where I find myself holding my own breath.
As for the love interest, I'm such a sucker for love triangles. I mean being a book need that I am...I've even found myself wishing a hot sexy ghost would come and invade my dreams. Lol!! I also love that the men themselves aren't perfect. I love how they also have their flaws along with Peyton. It makes it more relatable that way.
As for the setting, it makes me want to go to New Orleans and experience everything that was highlighted on the book. The food, the voodoo place, the garden district, the French quarter... It goes on and on.
Over all the book is a great ride for your imagination. I would highly recommend this to everyone. If you're not in to the paranormal or haven't read anything paranormal I would highly suggest you pick this book up. It could change your mind and get you hooked. It has enough paranormal balanced with some romance, suspense, action and horror to get you wanting more. Can't wait till September for book 2!!!!!
